Quests can be unlocked by doing various tasks, such as killing bosses. This will allow certain NPCs to give the player the new quest by talking to them, indicated by an orange "!" hovering above their head. Once these quests are unlocked, however, they remain permanently unlocked for all characters and worlds on a player's device.

To start a quest, a player needs to select the quest in the Available tab and click on the Activate button in the bottom right of the book. Only 5 <!--But actually 2???--> quests can be active at the same time, and progress for a quest can only be achieved if the quest is active. The player can deactivate the quest at any time, but they will lose any progress gained for that quest. Once a quest has been activated, an overlay will appear on the right side of the screen detailing the player's progress towards completing the quest(s). This can be toggled using the {{key|questhud}} key.
